It was a sad day on the New York media landscape this week when news spread that Paper Magazine abruptly shut down operations and laid off its entire editorial staff.
The seminal publication had been responsible for covering - and creating - downtown nightlife, art, fashion, music, and culture since 1984, when it was founded by the ultimate cool kid editors Kim Hastreiter and David Hershkovits.
Over the past (nearly) four decades, Paper has kicked off countless careers in the industry and has even broken the internet once or thrice - we all remember where we were when that Kim Kardashian cover came out in 2014, and don't even get us started on the Julia Fox and Pete Davidson photo shoot.
Although the future of the magazine is currently uncertain (per AdWeek, the publisher is "seeking to cut costs as it looks toward alternative options to remain in operation"), a number of industry icons who've stepped through its doors (or have been featured in its pages) over the years have taken to social media to pay tribute to Paper, from man-about-town and longtime staffer Mickey Boardman to designer Nicola Formichetti and stylist Brad Goreski.
Here's hoping for the mag's triumphant return - NYC just wouldn't be the same without it!
