Music To Your Ears: Bands To Hear This Week

by Mara Siegler · December 14, 2010

Yes, it's freezing cold outside, and all you want to do after work is go home and snuggle up next to your heater. There are, however, some bands playing this week that make layering up in winter gear worth it. Florence Welch graces NYC with her vocals, Prince brings crushed velvet to MSG, Weezer walks down memory lane, and more...

    Tuesday, Dec 14

Florence WelchTop Pick: Florence and the Machine play Irving Plaza tonight. The show is sold out and tickets are going for around $100 on Craigslist, but it's worth it to hear Florence Welch's '80s riot girl meets ’90s Lilith Fair sound live. Don't let the fact that "Dog Days Are Over," played prominently in the never-ending commercial called "Eat, Pray Love" dissuade you.

    Alternatives:

Ben Folds, minus the five, will be at Beacon Theater playing tunes from the Nonesuch album "Lonely Avenue," which features lyrics by author Nick Hornby. Remember, it's not what you're like, but what you like.

For a folky evening of what will probably be mostly acoustic offerings, try Sun Airway, Lia Ices, Mike Wexler, and Sebastian Blanck at Mercury Lounge.

    Wednesday, Dec. 15

Nada SurfTop Pick: Relive the '90's with Nada Surf at Mercury Lounge. Sure they may be considered a one-hit wonder with "Popular," but what a hit and what a wonder. If nothing else it will give you a chance to dig out your old concert T, quote lines from "My So Called Life," and reminisce about your wasted youth.

    Alternatives:

Freelance Whales and Miniature Tigers take over Webster Hall with their warm, bubbly rock.

Fun power poppers Miniboone will be playing with Landlady at Rockshop. They will also be at Bowery Electric on Thursday.

If you want to dance head to Public Assembly for Navegante, DJ Sega, C-Lo, and Rye Rye, the first artist signed to M.I.A.'s record label N.E.E.T.

    Thursday, Dec. 16

Keep AwayTop Pick: Keepaway plays fuzzy, lo-fi rock that, if you get drunk enough, is actually easy to dance to. Being that they are playing at Glasslands, this should be no problem.

    Alternatives:

Computer Magic started out by making electronic pop from the confines of her bedroom. She'll be taking the sound outside her home with a show at Pianos.

    Friday, Dec. 17

WeezerTop Pick: Weezer, who really needs no introduction, will be playing "The Blue Album" at Roseland Ballroom. If you prefer "Pinkteron," widely argued in certain circles to be their best, they'll be playing "The Good Life" and all the rest the next night at the same venue. They'll be mixing the greatest hits with songs from their new album "Hurley."

    Alternatives:

Whether or not you're a fan of Nascar, if you have a sense of humor you will love the fun, authentic Daytona 500-style of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. They'll be at Bowery with Brooklyn rockers Bear Hands and The Tony Castles.

Reggie Watts, the comedian and musician who tends to improv and say the kind of things you shouldn't EVER in public, will be at Highline.

    Saturday, Dec. 18

PrinceTop Pick: Prince at Madison Square Garden!!! Prince at Madison Square Garden!!! Prince at Madison Square Garden!!! Obey the Purple One. Party like it's 1999.

    Alternatives:

Mike Doughty, the former front man of Soul Coughing, will be at Joe's Pub playing singer-songwriter type tunes that will make you tap your feet.

Marcy Playground are likely to smell both sex and candy at Mercury Lounge.

    Sunday, Dec. 19

Top Pick: Yes, it seems like every band right now is playing dreamy, lo-fi music, but Real Estate does it real well. The band will be at  Brooklyn Bowl with Big Troubles. Taking to the lanes while listening to beachy tunes has never been better and is worth going out on a Sunday evening.
