In 1978, owner Steve Mass acquired the TriBeca space under the pretense of starting a cabaret. Also, he started with a mere $15,000, which is a fever-dream for present day Tribeca residents. This spot acted as a grimy counterpart to the glitzy Studio 54 and provided a forum for musicians like Lou Reed and The Cramps to share their music. During its short-lived yet potent go at it before shutting down in 1983, the bar had everything from gender neutral bathrooms to a Keith Haring-curated gallery.
