Ah, the Gilded Age in New York. What a time for soirées! In 1905, wealthy bachelor and heir James Hazen Hyde threw a stunning ball, French 18th century–themed, at Fifth Avenue society haunt Sherry's, and let's just say it was too much of a hit. Hyde, who had dated the likes of Alice Roosevelt (as in, the First Daughter), was set to become president of Equitable Life, but his role in the society column led board members to believe he was too frivolous to run the company. With his reputation sufficiently ruined, he did what we all would do - packed up and moved to France.
