At the time of his arrest on Friday, June 30th, McFarland was reportedly living in a $21,000-a-month Manhattan penthouse and driving a $110,000 Maserati. And while he had $5000 in cash in his pocket when federal agents picked him up, he showed up to court on Saturday with a public defender. Needless to say, his high-flying lifestyle is now being questioned.
Besides multiple, multi-million class action suits being brought upon the Fyre organizer, McFarland is being criminally investigated for fraud. Apparently, he oversold promises to investors, too. A complaint claims that he "doctored a Scottrade account statement to say that he owned $2.5 million in a particular company’s stock, when in reality his position was worth only $1,500."
Even veteran party photographer Patrick McMullan, a respected name on the New York scene for years, was tricked into believing McFarland's lies. He told the NY Times that he paid $100,000 for a website that was never delivered: "I thought he was smarter than he was.”
