Her past struggles
Chiara has been praised, and even awarded, for her openness in addressing her mental health struggles and past substance abuse. Back in 2013, days before her father's inauguration, she released a video in which she candidly spoke about her history of depression which led to alcohol and drug abuse in her adolescence, and worsened during her freshman year of college.
In 2014, she penned an essay for the now-defunct xoJane about her journey, poignantly writing, "I was surrounded by love, but I always felt less-than, out-of-place, restless, irritable, and discontent." She continued, "Some people believe that it is impossible for people who come from backgrounds like mine to suffer from the diseases of depression and addiction. I am here to tell you that that is not true - 10 percent external conditions. Mental illness does not discriminate."
A year later, she joined her parents in leading a youth counseling initiative aimed at inspiring the city's teens to reach out about their mental health struggles.
