The Plaza

Before Eloise and Truman Capote roamed its corridors and ballroom, the Plaza Hotel hosted the who's who of Gilded Age society, including Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, railroad magnate Jay Gould and his wife, and "Diamond Jim" Brady with his longtime mistress Miss Lillian Russell.

Designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the present structure, the 21-story, French Renaissance-inspired château style building, began construction in 1905, replacing the original hotel which opened in 1890. These days, you can slip into the Palm Court for your own ladies' luncheon and high tea.

The Plaza, 768 5th Ave.
