Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum

Ever heard of the name Carnegie? Uh, duh. While today it's known as the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the artsy destination is housed in the landmarked former home of Andrew Carnegie, the famous steel tycoon and one of the richest Americans in history.

The stunning 64-room mansion was built from 1899 to 1902, designed in the style of a Georgian country house. Carnegie purposely had it built farther north than where his peers were living at the time because there was more open land to add a sprawling garden - which is still there to be enjoyed.
