Don't Worry Everyone, New York Is Home To More Millionaires Than Ever

by Stephanie Maida · March 1, 2023

Remember back in 2020 when everyone was losing their shit over rich people fleeing to Florida?

Well folks, it's time to breathe a sigh of relief. New York's still got plenty of millionaire taxpayers in tow. In fact, the state's got more wealthy residents than ever.

While some High Net Worth Individuals couldn't take the heat during those early days of COVID, the New York Times reports that the state actually gained about 10,000 new millionaires between 2020 and 2021. That brings the latest tallied total up to more than 80,000 high-rollers officially calling New York home.

We mean, considering the rent prices these days, it makes sense that a large influx of new residents would be on the more, um, financially comfortable side, but the facts and figures may also represent what most of us already know: the rich just keep getting richer.

According to the state Department of Taxation and Finance, 14,678 taxpayers fell into the millionaire tax bracket for the first time in 2021. So yeah, plenty of our "new millionaires" are probably a bunch of former HENRYs who finally made the seven-figure jump.

Congrats to them! Now can we actually do something with their tax contributions?
