Alix Verley-Pietrafesa, Designer

When I was first considering the idea of moving from London to New York a couple years ago, the treehouse fell in my lap and sealed the deal.

It's this junky studio on the Lower East Side with vile pink bathroom tile and sloping floors. Despite the shabbiness, I was completely charmed.  Something about the light - its position on the corner, with windows perfect for gazing out of, makes one feel nestled in a tree. Every single evening without fail, my doorbell starts to ring, usually one or all of my 3 siblings, friends and clients, who come to eat cheese and sip wine and play dress up.  Everyone ends up gravitating here, and everyone is always welcome here, at the creative hub where I sew collections and give birth to Bohemia. It's always messy, with scraps of cloth and textiles and thread everywhere, so no one feels like they have to be on their best behavior - that's exactly how I want my guests and clients to feel! I don't like things that are too precious, in my clothes or my apartment or the company I keep. I know I need to move to a bigger space but somehow… can't imagine being anywhere else - It's where the magic happens.
