Renny & Reed, we should be proud to say, belongs to our wonderful city. Not only does it belong here, but it also never fails to erect an atrocious display outside of its Park Avenue store. The most recent display, pictured here, caught me by surprise as I wandered from Alice’s Tea Cup, down Madison and over towards the Borders on 57th and Park. Maybe the problem is that I don’t have an eye for cutting edge floral design; but I couldn’t help but shake my head in disapproval at the twin, white birch tiki huts currently guarding the store entrance. Personally, I dislike the unnatural positioning of the branches, the way the ends were left jagged, pointing upward, and how the whole thing is anchored by a box of harlequin green lattice. I swear I’ve seen similar things on the Target website. I suppose it just goes to show that once you’ve achieved notoriety, you can still make money irrespective of any self-inflicted PR disgraces. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that the Renny & Reed displays are a florist’s answer to Paris Hilton, but I might put them at a Mel Gibson.
