More from the 2014 Tibet House Benefit Concert and Gala
Following the show, guests and performers headed to Gotham Hall where the Tibet House gala took place. The banquet featured traditional Tibetan cuisine as well as an open bar on opposite sides of the massive room, with cultural decorations throughout. Guests mingled and enjoyed cocktails until Arden Wohl and Robert Thurman stood up in the middle of the room and auctioned off a signed guitar from the show. Musicians like New Order and The National were full engaged all night, talking to guests even as the crowd dwindled down, while Patti Smith and Iggy Pop were all smiles but kept a low profile. We caught up with Matt Beringer, Bryce Dessner, and Aaron Dessner and asked about their favorite performances from the show:
Matt Berninger: "I think mine was my favorite, I thought I was excellent (laughs)...no, to see Iggy Pop performing with Bernard Sumner and New Order, and to be doing Joy Division songs—it's a bizarre and beautiful alchemy of the world when those kinds of things come together. And for us to be invited and be a part of that is very humbling, and very moving, and awesome."
Aaron Dessner: "We also had a lot of friends join us on stage, and these events are great for collaboration. Phillip Glass creates a really open and encouraging atmosphere for the performers. It's really fun; it's rare events like this are that good."

We also pressed them about their own music, and understanding their poetic but often challenging lyrics such as in the song "Green Gloves":
Matt Berninger: "I think that the songs for us that are still a little out of our hands, our grasp, are the ones that we stick with, that we keep coming back to and like to play. So we stopped trying to connect the dots. I don't think you get any closer to the truth when you try to do that. I'm not sure 100% what [Green Gloves] is about, but it makes me think about things in my life so it works."
Arden Wohl was full of energy when she go to Gotham Hall. She immediately began chatting up reporters and guests alike, exclaiming her joy in seeing Patti Smith live, and how she danced throughout the show in a booth despite many audience members watching the show seated. We spoke with Tom Chapman and Phil Cunningham of New Order about how their music has such an influence on a lot of current bands, and they mentioned the artists they really dig right now are Phantogram from New York and The Whip from Manchester.
