Orange Is The New Black told us: "You guys have to be a part of it. This is my second year and I love it." A simple statement that holds a profound truth. Cycle for Survival is this can't-believe-it-until-you-see-it, high-energy, national, indoor team cycling event which raises funds that go towards Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and their research into rare cancers. 100% of every dollar raised goes to the organization, and this year's event raised over 19 million dollars. Even more amazing, if you can believe it, was the feeling of community that linked and bonded all of its participants together. From doctors, researchers, and celebrities, to cancer warriors, survivors, and families, everyone joined in battle together to fight and beat cancer. The event, an undeniable success, had a few surprises like Seth Meyer's comedic challenge to kick start the ride:
"I'm probably better at the cycle part than everybody else here... but it's not a contest. But if that helps you drive yourself to try to cycle as well as me then let that drive you. It is the first year I have been here and not done Saturday Night Live the night before which is why I am going to cycle so good! I was not out late having vodka-sodas and chicken wings, so this is going to be my best ride ever! I hope this is going to be everybody else's best ride ever. Let's get started for the last hour!"
He certainly made us laugh and definitely motivated us to give it our all. But he was right, it wasn't a contest. In that moment we were all winning, riding, and singing Christina's Burlesque as we created hope.
