#BringBackOurGirls

Finally—an example of when hashtags are used for good. Back in April, 230 schoolgirls were kidnapped from their dorm in Nigeria, a tragedy that went largely uncovered by the mainstream media. So why are we talking about it now? Social media, of course. In a rallying cry on Twitter, the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls raised awareness of the story, finally bringing it to the world's attention. Nearing it's one millionth mention, the call for global leaders to take action has been spread across Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram by everyone from Justin Timberlake and Cara Delevingne to Michelle Obama. POTUS has since announced that the U.S. would be sending in a team to assist, so who says #Tweetivism is pointless? Seems like that whole #Hony2012 debacle can now be redeemed.
