Nice try, bro
Not a first date but I managed a restaurant and received a call from a guy saying he wanted to make his night with his girlfriend extra special. Asked if we could set a table with flowers and a card - Not a huge deal, sure. Then he asked me to handwrite the card which was weird as hell but he sent me an e-mail with this seriously romantic note. But I realized holy shit, we were going to watch this guy propose. I've been working in restaurants a long time, never seen a proposal and we were all excited as fuck.
We went all out - I got a massive bouquet of flowers, we set the table beautifully, I put the card on the table, we dimmed our lights near that table a bit, and I put a bottle of wine on the table that was on the house.
Reservation time comes and nothing. About 20 minutes later, a couple comes in and just requests a table for two. They walk past the table and the guy just says, "Uh can I sit here?" "Oh that's for a reservation, sorry." "Yeah, that was me. I called." Kind of weird and awkward but whatever, this dude has got to be nervous as hell.
As dinner progressed, we were listening to their conversation and it became increasingly obvious that this dude had cheated on the girl and was trying to get out of the doghouse. She ended up breaking up with him before food even came out and left.
