Similan Islands, Thailand
Just above Phuket are the Similan Islands, a protected national marine park which is only open from November to April. These small islands are what people imagine when they think of Phuket - lush jungles, giant rocks emerging from the ocean, white sand, and clear water. The Thais value these islands so much that there are no accommodation structures on any of the islands. You’re only allowed to camp out in tents or stay on the boats. The best part about this idyllic little retreat? They actually take your shoes away from you as soon as you begin your journey to the National Park, and only return them when you’re back on the mainland!
