On Tuesday, former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away at the age of 92. Until her death, she had been the only living wife and mother of two presidents, and the matriarch of a political dynasty.
Politics aside, she was loved by many, and was considered "America's grandmother." Though she rubbed elbows with heads of state and royals (she's been pictured alongside Princess Diana on plenty of occasions), Barbara was notoriously down-to-earth, famously telling Vogue that the pearls in her portrait were fake.
During her time in the White House, she advocated for literacy, supported the Ronald McDonald House's efforts to help families with ill children (her own daughter, Robin, had died from Leukemia at four), and joined the battle against AIDS and homelessness.
