Ai Weiwei, "Sunflower Seeds"

Ai Weiwei, "Sunflower Seeds"
Like sunflower seeds? How about five tons of them? First debuted at the Tate Modern in 2010, each of these millions of seeds is actually a miniature porcelain sculpture, hand-painted and crafted by artisans in northern China (the sunflower was a common metaphor for The People during China's Cultural Revolution). Now trans-planted to New York's Mary Boone Gallery, this exhibition by Ai Weiwer isn't just for the birds, but rather a commentary on "the role of the individual versus the masses, and China’s long history of labor intensive production and export." Through February 4 at Mary Boone Gallery, 541 W 24th Street. For more information, go HERE. [Photo via]
