Teufelsberg: Devil Mountain
Built on an 80-metre-high hill from the 400,000 buildings worth of rubble after WWII, Teufelsberg was a former Nazi military education institution until the US National Security Agency (NSA) turned it into a radar station during the Cold War.
Buried beneath it to this day lies the never-completed Nazi military technical college designed by Hitler’s architect Albert Speer. In the 1990s, in an attempt to sweep its notorious history under a carpet, investors planned to build a glimmering high-rise luxury hotel-apartment complex on the hill. However, the project was shut down due to fears of radioactive waste.
