Emma Woodhouse of Jane Austen's Emma

Jane Austen is queen of strong female characters who kick-ass while looking like saints. Emma, at least at the novel's opening, is so self-possessed that she doesn't even feel slightly inclined to follow romantic pursuits.

As Jane Austen puts it, "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her."

Don some floral, empire-waisted dresses with a soft-curled updo and you may just find yourself gliding through life with little to "distress or vex" you.

(Also if a literary heroine is chic enough for Gwyneth, she's chic enough for you.)
