Musical Beginnings
Although the 27-year-old musician didn't write her first song until she was 18, Marina claims that she knew she'd be famous since she was 9. As she told
Digital Spy:
"I just had this weird feeling and energy inside. I can't really describe it, but I knew 110% that this was what I wanted to do."
At 18, she moved to London to pursue her music career, where she hopped from a two-month stint at dance school, to a singing course at Tech Music, to a music degree at the University of East London. Eventually, she transferred to Middlesex University and ultimately dropped out.
In 2005, Marina created the stage name, "Marina and the Diamonds," and while it may make her sound like a band rather than a solo artist, she says that "the Diamonds" are in reference to her fans.
She self-produced her first few demos until paying someone £500 to produce her first EP, which was released and sold through her Myspace page in 2007.
