Musical Success
In 2008, Marina was scouted and booked to open for Gotye, a performance which exposed her to Warner Music Group and finally got her signed. After the release of a few singles and a second EP, her first album,
The Family Jewels, debuted in February 2010, peaking at number five on the UK Music Charts. She garnered praise and multiple UK award nominations, including a BRIT and an MTV Europe Music Award, which she won.
Her second album,
Electra Heart, was released in April 2012, and while her sound has become more dance-y pop, the songs themselves are more biting than bubblegum. Referring to it as having "Goth Britney Spears" vibes, Marina
describes the album as
"a tongue-in-cheek record [that] also deals with the truth about love and commercialism and just being a young person."
With cynical lyrics and an ironically amplified "Pop Star" public image, Marina simultaneously critiques and perpetuates her brand of kitsch. The result is smart and refreshing music that could be both annotated and mindlessly danced-to.
In February 2013, she announced that she has started work on her third studio album.
