Sleeping Beauty Diet
Elvis Presley isn't exactly remembered for his devotion to health and wellness. In fact, the only thing all his adoring fans remember about his diet was how horrible it was.
The King of Rock n Roll had a soft spot for peanut butter and banana sandwiches and burnt bacon, so it's surprising that he's also recognized for trying one of the oddest diet trends of the 20th century.
Popularized in Jacqueline Susann's 1966 novel,
Valley of the Dolls, the Sleeping Beauty Diet was trendy among burnt-out movie stars and aging rockers alike.
The Sleeping Beauty Diet required the dieter to be heavily sedated for days, and the idea was that if you were sleeping, you would not only avoid eating for a few days, but you'd also sleep off the weight and wake up thinner. The Sleeping Beauty Diet sounds great in theory-- you get to sleep for a really long time and you're skinny when you wake up-- but if this diet is ever going to make a comeback, it better get a spokesperson who's thinner than Elvis. And not dead.
