The Queen Mary

The Queen Mary

Location: 1126 Queens Highway, Long Beach

History: The Queen Mary was a luxury liner that sailed the North Atlantic Route between the UK and the US from 1936 to 1967. During WWII, the ship was used to transport American soldiers to Europe which has left it with a rich history of both happy memories and hair-raising horror stories. Interestingly, the ship has had to close off certain areas from visitors because of the frequency of paranormal encounters.

Haunting: There are numerous stories of haunting surrounding The Queen Mary. One in particular stems from the demise of a young man, John Henry, who worked on board and was crushed to death while attempting to flee from a fire in Engine Room 13. At the time, new labor laws and economic woes made employment hard to find. With these new laws stipulating that no child under 16 may work, and no child under 18 can work in dangerous jobs, Henry, desperate for employment, lied about his age to be hired aboard the liner where he worked in the engine room shoveling coal into the belly of the beast and met his untimely demise.

It has been reported that at times, the door to Engine Room 13 is hot to the touch, and sometimes a bright ball of light and billowing smoke emerges from the room. However, it is more often reported that various screams and knocks are heard coming from the engine room. Additionally, an in-house psychic, Peter James, has claimed to have communicated with more than 150 ghosts on the liner.
