Houdini Mansion

Houdini Mansion

Location: 2398 Laurel Canyon Boulevard, Hollywood

History: Harry Houdini could escape seemingly any situation. His prolific career took him around the world, briefly landing him in the Hollywood Hills. It has been debated whether the mansion was actually owned by Houdini himself, or a friend of his. Regardless of whether Houdini owned the estate or not, he has certainly spent time at the location, and certainly enjoyed his time there. After Houdini's untimely death, his wife felt inclined to purchase a home around the corner from the alleged Houdini Estate. Out of all the places she could have chosen from—Vaudeville, New York, Hungary even— she decided on the Hollywood Hills, a place she and her late husband only spent a fraction of time in comparison to their other homes. In an attempt to communicate with her late husband, she conducted seances at the Laurel Canyon home which some believe may have brought Houdini's spirit back to the area.

Haunting: The Houdini mansion featured an expansive pool, a secret underground tunnel that connected the main house to a guest house across the street, and numerous grottos. After the mansion burned down in 1959, long after Houdini's death, the only remains are crumbling staircases, emptied pools, and other whimsical features. From the street, the private property goes unnoticed by traffic, however, people tend to find a way to sneak in and enjoy the grounds. Since the fire, it has been reported that Houdini's ghost roams the grounds seeking solace for his untimely death.
