L.A. Pot Ban Put On Hold
Might as well get all the details of this major development out of the way, in case you consumed a really potent edible about a month ago and have been mostly napping and playing video games ever since. Well, you've luckily awoken to an L.A. that you can still buy pot in, but we have to tell you, it was pretty dicey for the last month or so, after the City Council voted to shut down the over 800 dispensaries in Los Angeles (as the NPR write-up notes, there are more dispensaries in L.A. proper than there are Starbucks). But pro-medicinal advocates, in the kind of sweeping coordinated effort that most people figure stoners aren't really inclined towards, collected 50,000 signatures (they only needed 27,425, so maybe they forgot the number) in order to temporarily suspend the ban from going into effect until the measure can, in theory, be brought before the general voting public. We say "in theory" because there's still a sea of technicalities at play for both sides, including the fact that all pot shops in the City of Los Angeles are operating under an "unpermitted land use," and can theoretically be shut down at any time on that fact alone. Still, it looks like those suffering from chronic illness, extreme anxiety, and crippling fear that they might not enjoy The Expendables 2 are all safe– for now. [via]
