What elements of Panama inspired this resort collection?
Pooja: The local native Indians, called the Kuna tribe. They wear beaded wraps on their legs and arms, wear nose rings, floral print tops, and have these mola arts which one of my prints is inspired by (mola mandala). I was also inspired by the architecture of old Panama, which is white and on cobblestone roads. I love Panama because it's the place I have an emotional connection to, and it's where I lived from childhood to my teenage years. Every time I go back, it's reminiscent of all the places, beaches and streets I walked on year after year. I still drive the local roads instead of the big new highways. It's where I learned the beach-to-bar lifestyle.
When the news of IMG pulling out of Swim Week was released, what was the deciding factor to still show your collection in Miami?
I was clear in my intention to still show the collection in the same creative vision I had previously done. This year, it was about what the designer felt comfortable with and what they considered important. For me, it's important to show the industry and my fans the vision I had of my resort 2016 collection from concept to actuality. Nothing beats the energy of the runway show and seeing the excitement and vibe of the crowd.
