Retrospective of S
For a curator, it's sometimes difficult to describe the connections between diverse participants of a group exhibition. Unless you're Jonathan Safron Foer. Alongside artist and Yale dean Samuel Messer, the
Everything is Illuminated author is curating "Retrospective of S," a show highlighting the works of a fictional artist.
Wait,
fictional? How is this possible? Well, in reality, it's a collection of 10 female painters. But their works are accompanied by Foer-penned placards which, rather than describe the painting, traces S-'s made-up career (“With no artistic training whatsoever, and only the public library as an art education, her youthful work flowed directly, and without mediation, from her imagination”.) Since Foer was kept in the dark as to what the artists were creating, this "Restrospective" should yield an interesting juxtaposition of art and fiction.
