Mickalene Thomas: Origin of the Universe
Mickalene Thomas knows her art history. And her paintings, which often feature vibrant depictions of African American women, pay homage to such artists as Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet, and Henri Matisse.
This week, Thomas will make her much-anticipated New York solo debut at The Brooklyn Museum, which will display nearly 100 works, including installations that recreate her paintings’ 1970s-inspired settings. The exhibition will commence the same day as the ribbon-cutting of the Brooklyn Barclays Center, where a 120-foot vinyl mural by Thomas will also be
unveiled.
Dates: September 28 – January 20
Location: Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn
