Dan Colen, The spirits that I called

Dan Colen, The spirits that I called
Known for his appropriation of "low-culture" and graffiti, Dan Colen continues to challenge the standards of high art with his new exhibition at Oko gallery. The spirits that I called will feature a series of fantastical, trompe l'oeil pieces that the artist has dubbed "the Miracle paintings," partly inspired by Disney's Fantasia. The theatricality and glittering vivacity of the scenes have also been influenced by mid-19th century Fairy Paintings, such as those produced by John Anster Fitzgerald and his opium visions. Fittingly, Colen's contemporary take on magical imagery will be juxtaposed with Fitzgerald's archetype of the Pre-Raphaelite genre—mending a centuries-wide gap of drug-induced hallucinations and the art they inspire. An opening reception will be held on May 15, from 8-10 pm When: May 15-June 15 Where: Oko, 220 East 10th Street [Photo via]
