Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau) (1883-1884) by John Singer Sargent
Originally painted with one strap of her gown slipping of her shoulder, Madame Pierre Gautreau was known during her lifetime as a woman of "artful appearance." Facing ridicule, the artist, John Singer Sargent, was forced to repaint the strap. In her classic black dress and subtle sex-appeal, Madame X is an emblem for style in post-colonial America.
