Gina Rodriguez: Media Images & Self-Love

GINA: "We look at any image. And we are bombarded by images. But any image from a billboard to a magazine cover to a TV show to a film. And we find our relatability. We find where we exist. We find where we fit in. We find who looks like us. We find our identity to be validated....I mean, there are two parts to that. One is: We have to start practicing self-love and teaching our children at a very young age how to accept the body they've been given. The life they've been given. And how to make the most of their circumstance, and create more opportunities. And then there's the other way of teaching them to navigate through this society. And say: Okay, that image may look like one image, and I look like another. And I am just as powerful, and just as beautiful, and just as strong, and just as intelligent. So, for me, I just wanted to make sure that I was creating more of those images that hadn't been seen because I knew what they did to me as a young girl. That being said—yes, I didn't look like Jennifer Lawrence. And, yes, the opportunities weren't similar. And the characters weren't available—quote unquote 'available.' So I just waited. And I was patient. And I discovered the kind of woman that I wanted to be. And the kind of choices I was going to make. And, ultimately, the story I wanted to tell my children one day; or my nieces and nephews, or my friends, or my neighbors, or whoever would listen."
