Her "Uncut Gems" character was actually based on her
It's no coincidence that there are major similarities between Julia and her on-screen persona, who also happens to be named Julia - the role was literally based on her. Josh and Benny Safdie, the filmmaking brothers who've been steadily gaining recognition in the gritty culture circles of downtown New York, met Fox years ago at Jack's Wife Freda. Josh had been talking to her about a movie he wanted her to star in and, as he told The New York Times, when he finally let her read the script, "Julia asked me if I had been spying on her because she thought that there were so many strange similarities with the character. But she gave me good feedback, so I would call her on a whim when I had writer’s block, and I would ask her for advice. The character was just kind of constantly evolving to become more specific to her.”
