Previous Controversies
Although Chua, who is known as a polarizing professor, has been praised by students for her personal support of "students of color, for first-generation professionals, for students from state colleges, for foreign students," her past controversies have created an even wider divide in the court of public opinion. In 2018, when Brett Kavanaugh was nominated for the Supreme Court, Chua's comments praising him were seen as a betrayal among students. Some claimed she commented that his female clerks "looked like models." Her own daughter worked as a clerk for him.
Chua is also married to fellow Yale law professor, Jed Rubenfeld, who fell from prominence after students came forward to accuse him of sexual misconduct. After an investigation into his behavior, he was suspended from teaching until 2022.
