Supreme: The Giant of the Industry
Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you've probably seen, heard of, or worn a Supreme piece. James Jebbia took the skating world by storm in the '90s by unveiling his hallmark skate store on Lafayette Street in SoHo, earning lines that snaked around the block. While they did not initially start out selling their own clothing and accessories (most skate stores sell the well-known skate brands like Thrasher, Independent, and Anti-Hero), their dominance in the streetwear world has been felt since the early 2010s. Since then, they have collaborated with brands ranging from Timberland (pictured above) to North Face, and have created all sorts of random items, like crowbars and water kettles. Their reach has even been felt on Wall Street: they were valued at $1 billion in 2019, and as a result, fifty percent of the company was sold to the Carlyle Group for $500 million in October of last year. Does it get any more classic than Supreme? I certainly don't think so.
