If there was anything unusual about the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards (you know, like the glaring green screens, pre-recorded performances, and virtual audience), Lady Gaga's procession of outfit changes was the least of it. In fact, Gaga's return to her outlandish aesthetic almost brought a sense of normalcy to the show. Because we're so used to her wild accessories, not even her series of face masks felt as jarring or out of place as they did elsewhere during the broadcast, when they made appearances on dystopian backup dancers or stressed-out set assistants. Nevertheless, the star made a statement with her looks - and one that went beyond mere fashion.
Teaming up with her OG stylist, Nicola Formichetti, Gaga served up all the PPE couture worthy of a pandemic, and spread the most important message of the night: Wear a damn mask!
