Button Down Collared Polo Shirt

Inspired by an observation of a polo match in England, Brooks Brothers began producing their button-down collar polo shirt in 1896, and now call it “the most imitated item in fashion history.” Their button-down collar polo shirt is a button-down oxford-cloth shirt and is not to be confused with Polo by Ralph Lauren’s iconic short sleeve shirts which themselves were imitations of Renee Lacoste’s Tennis Shirts. Today these shirts might be seen as formal dress shirts by many Americans, but at the time, formal dress shirts had detachable collars.
