Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

In 1865, Brooks Brothers was commissioned to design a frock coat for President Abraham Lincoln’s second inauguration. In its lining was an elaborate embroidered eagle with the motto “One Country, One Destiny.” He wore it as he gave his address on March 4th, “With malice toward none; with charity for all… let us strive on to finish the work we are in... to do all which may achieve and cherish a just, and a lasting peace.” A few weeks later, just five days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox Courthouse, President Lincoln was attending a play wearing that new Brooks Brothers "Prince Albert coat, waistcoat, trousers, and overcoat" and was laughing at a line when he was shot in the back in the head by the world’s most famous actor, John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln’s funeral procession in New York passed by the Brooks Brothers store on Broadway. The mirror used at his fittings is on display at their Madison Avenue store and the clothing he was wearing when he was shot is at the Ford Theater, including the coat with the custom embroidered lining.
