Steph Korey, Away
Slack drama, "bullying," and a "toxic" work environment led to the public criticism of Steph Korey, the CEO of Instagram-famous Away luggage who co-founded the company with Jen Rubio in 2015. According to an explosive article published by The Verge, Korey sent aggressive messages (some at 3 am), drove customer experience reps to overwork on holidays when orders were backed up due to factory issues and refused to let them take time off. Facing backlash after the report, Korey issued a public apology and said she'd step down as Chief Exec. Just a month later, in January 2020, she backtracked and maintained her position as CEO alongside a new co-CEO, Stuart Haselden. "Frankly, we let some inaccurate reporting influence the timeline of a transition plan that we had," she said.
