When did you start painting?
Well, I've been painting my whole life but I actually didn't study painting in college—I did photography. I had a Painting 1 teacher who basically told me I was terrible, who I clashed with, and it was for the better because photography is great. I put out a book of my photography. I still shoot on a large format occasionally. I like the dark room process a lot, so I don’t really shoot unless it’s for that. But I've always painted. My favorite painting is actually one I did of my horse the day he died. That was kind of a really sad day but it was also the day I realized I could paint.
A friend and I were joking that coming out as a painter is like coming out of the closet. You’re like terrified of what your family’s going to say. Like, 'Mom, dad, I have something to tell you…I’m not pre-law. I’m a painter.' I think some people in my family would have been less freaked out if I had come out as anything else. And they’re still processing.
