Mindset

Perhaps the most important aspect of the Mediterranean diet is one's approach to food in general. Meals are considered a celebration, something to share and savor with friends and family - La dolce vita and all that. There are none of those "good" and "bad" associations with food fueled by American diet culture, which can actually lead to overeating. There's also a focus on fresh, unprocessed ingredients. As The New York Times once put it, "You could say that the Mediterranean diet prohibits nothing that was recognized as food by your great-grandmother." So forget what the latest diet fad dictates and instead ask yourself, "What would nonna do?"
