#ShareTheMicNow: White Women Are Handing Over Their Instagrams To Amplify Black Voices

by Stephanie Maida · June 10, 2020

Social media is a funny thing. For as much as it facilitates connections with people all over the world, it also somehow allows us to remain in our very own, algorithm-curated bubble. As the past few weeks (or years! or decades!) have shown us, staying sheltered in your comfort zone, especially as a non-marginalized person, can lead to disastrous results.

With the all-too-necessary (and much-delayed) conversations about race revving up on social media and beyond, a new initiative aims to amplify the often unheard voices of Black women to audiences they wouldn't typically reach. Today, June 10th, #ShareTheMicNow will see dozens of Black women, from activists and authors to leaders in their field, take over the Instagram accounts of white women with large platforms, placing those who have been doing the work at the rightful center as catalysts of change. (Psst, fellow white women, this is an example of using your privilege to lift up others!)

Stars participating in the powerful swap include Gwyneth Paltrow, whose 'gram will be helmed by self-care guru and coolest doula we know, Latham Thomas; Kourtney Kardashian, who is giving the floor to entertainment exec Bozoma Saint John; and even Julia Roberts, whose feed will be in the stylish hands of fashion editor extraordinaire Kahlana Barfield Brown. Some other can't-miss cameos? Cosmo's Beauty Director Julee Wilson on Stacey Bendet's Alice + Olivia account, Elaine Welteroth stepping in for Michelle Monaghan, and Tarana Burke, the activist who originally started the #MeToo movement, taking over for author Glennon Doyle.

If you posted anything about "listening and learning" in regards to Black Lives Matter, this is your chance to follow through.

When the world listens to women, it listens to white women. For far too long, Black women’s voices have gone unheard, even though we have been using our voices loudly for centuries to enact change. Today, more than ever, it is NECESSARY that we create a unifying action to center Black women’s lives, stories, and calls to action. We need to listen to Black women. This is why I am participating in #ShareTheMicNow. . Tomorrow, Black women will speak from the Instagram accounts of white women we admire and respect who are active in this fight against racism. I am looking forward to taking over the lovely @michellemonaghan’s page tomorrow to share an excerpt from my book @morethanenough (book club anyone? 🤓) and to talk a little bit about how I am applying my time, my energy, and my gifts in this moment to play my part in a much larger movement for racial and economic justice. . The intention of this campaign is to magnify Black women and the important work that we are doing in order to catalyze the change that will only come when we truly hear each other’s voices. . Come through! Hope to see you tomorrow. Stay tuned in stories for more info on time. 🖤✊🏽
