Something Navy's Arielle Charnas Insta-Storied Her Coronavirus Test & People Are Mad

by Stephanie Maida · March 17, 2020

Wondering how one goes about getting tested for COVID-19? Well, Arielle Charnas, the OG fashion influencer behind Something Navy, just shared the experience with her 1.3 million followers on Instagram - but don't expect it to be as easy for you.

On Monday, Charnas took to IG stories to say that she had a sore throat and fever. Despite her doctor telling her that her symptoms sounded more like a typical flu, and that she should just stay home and quarantine, her fans apparently urged her to get tested for the novel coronavirus. However, tests in New York have been notoriously hard to get these days, and have only been made available to high-risk patients showing severe symptoms.

But alas, having "influence" comes with some perks. Charnas tagged a doctor friend who runs an Urgent Care on the Upper West Side and he told her to just come on by.

Her husband Brandon recorded her receiving drive-up testing for both the flu and coronavirus through the passenger side window, which involved a nurse in a protective face mask swabbing the inside of her nose. She later said that she was "freaking out" because the regular flu test came back negative, and that it would take a few days for the COVID-19 results to come in.

On Tuesday, the mother of two posted a selfie from home with a caption explaining her symptoms. "It’s been 4 days since I started feeling incredibly sick. Each day the symptoms evolve into something else and while I can’t imagine how I’d ever catch coronavirus (from what I know I haven’t been in contact with anyone who has it) I’m dealing with the weirdest virus I’ve ever had since mono."

Despite not yet knowing the coronavirus results, Charnas signed off saying that she was "determined to bring back some normalcy" to her life. "This is the last time I’m going to talk about feeling sick right now on my Instagram and move on to the things that make me happy, like my kids, family life, fashion and work. If it offends anyone or seems as though I’m being insensitive during this time, I’m sorry but it’s what I’ve chosen to do."

I’m so happy my fever is gone but the body pain that I’m feeling today is unlike anything else. It feels like we’re all in a bad dream right now but I’m determined to bring back some normalcy to our lives. This is the last time I’m going to talk about feeling sick right now on my Instagram and move on to the things that make me happy, like my kids, family life, fashion and work. If it offends anyone or seems as though I’m being insensitive during this time, I’m sorry but it’s what I’ve chosen to do. Back to regular content/programming. Can’t wait to post my partnerships and my outfits from inside my apt every day. I promise they will be better than this one 🤣 - love you all, stay home and stay healthy!

While many commenters expressed well wishes, others took to her post to criticize the fact that she was able to get a test when so many people are being denied them across the country. Obviously she's not the only person with privilege to have gotten access to testing - celebrities including Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, and Idris Elba all learned that they contracted the virus, while others including Kris Jenner, were given the test on the condition of mere "possible exposure." Hmmm.

In any case, of course, we hope Arielle feels better soon... and that there will also be enough resources for everyone who needs them, ASAP.

Update 3/18: Charnas has posted an update saying that she had indeed tested positive coronavirus and will be quarantining at home with her family.
