The Writing Workshop Disaster
This one's quite the saga. Instagram "writer" Caroline Calloway, who first gained an international following a few years ago when she studied at Cambridge and wrote long, flowery captions to document her experiences there, announced late last year that she would be going on a "world tour." Why? To host "creativity workshops" for fans at $165+ a pop. Writer and critic Kayleigh Donaldson, who had been following Calloway for some time, was quick to point out that the workshop seemed a little fishy, and in an epic Twitter thread she documented the train-crash in real time.
From TBD locations in cities she was already selling tickets for, to an excess of mason jars, to "homemade salads" gone awry, it soon became obvious that Calloway was scamming fans (or was actually just in way over her head). After the Twitter thread criticizing her tour went viral, Calloway cancelled it and apparently refunded people who bought tickets. But on January 16, after somewhat of a redemption press tour, Calloway announced that the show would go on. She appears to have hosted another meetup in New York, where she currently lives, and we haven't heard any complaints.
View this post on InstagramI’m so glad @carolinecalloway’s fans call her Miss Honey because Matilda is one of the best films of all time! I’m sure it’s a great book, too. 😉 I was a big Roald Dahl fan as a kid. What’s your fav children’s book/movie? James and the Giant Peach was a phenomenal read IMO. 🍯📖🎥
