Le Bal Oriental, 1951

Afterwards dubbed the “ball of the century,” Count Carlos de Beistegui’s Venetian gathering rocked Europe's high society. The heir to a silver empire, Beistegui was apparently too eccentric to have many friends, but that hardly stopped the upper crust from gossiping about the upcoming Italian fête for months leading up to it. Some would-be guests were so anxious about receiving their invitations, they even anchored in Venice early to wait for word. Everyone dressed as "retro aristocrats" (think Cleopatra and Louis XIV), and arrived via gondola. Our favorite bit of information? Christian Dior dressed Dali for the ball and Dali dressed Dior. Chic!
