Paul Poiret’s Thousand & Second Night, 1911

Who hasn't dreamt of putting their wife in a cage? In 1911, French fashion designer Paul Poiret threw a serious costume gala that would, quite frankly, put the Met Ball to shame. Guests were denied entry to his Paris villa if they arrived with no costume, or were instructed to wear the harem pants from his new collection. The Belle Époque circle were then led past a giant golden cage containing Poiret's wife among a gaggle of singing "concubines."
