Track 61

Track 61
We've heard of private elevator access, but the set-up at (or, more like under) the Waldorf=Astoria hotel is hard to beat.  Known as Track 61, this off-limits area was originally used for railway storage siding for the old New York Central Railroad.  In 1929, however, the space was converted into railway siding for hotel guests with private rail cars.  After reaching the underground destination, figures such as General John Pershing, General Douglas MacArthur and, most notably, FDR, would take advantage of the hotel's private automobile elevator that could handle their cars and take them to either the lobby or their suites.  In 1965, Andy Warhol hosted The Underground Party in the space.
