Atlantic Avenue Tunnel
Brooklyn's Atlantic Avenue Tunnel is the world's oldest subway tunnel, built in 1884 with primitive equipment and hand tools. New York City, however, was not technically the world's first city to feature a tunnel: that's because when the tunnel was constructed, Brooklyn was still its own city.
The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel was originally built to avoid the delays and accidents resulting from the
Long Island Rail Road trains running along city streets. Brooklyn historian Bob Diamond rediscovered the tunnel in 1980; it served as a space for tours and events until it was closed to the public in 2010.
