Pigs were New York's first sanitation system

New York's early sanitation system- pigs!
During the first half of the 19th century before garbage collectors existed, New York City's sanitation system comprised of pigs. While horses were used for transportation, pigs roamed the city's streets "cleaning" the city of garbage. Wall Street in particular was a popular zone for the pigs. By 1860 however the city decided to rid itself of the pigs and invested in human garbage collectors. [Photo via]
