[Photos by Will Ragozzino for PMc] To celebrate Stephen Sondheim's 80th birthday yesterday, Alec Baldwin, Vanessa Williams, Jane Krakowski and Angela Lansbury attended an early performance of Sondheim on Sondheim at Studio 54.
Joining what seemed to be half the cast of "30 Rock" at the performance was Bernadette Peters, film director Mike Nichols, Sam Mendes (without Kate Winslet, obviously), and Joanna Gleason.
After "Sondheim on Sondheim" ended, Mario Cantone, Victor Garber and Lynn Redgrave helped Sondheim blow out the candles on his birthday cake at The Sheraton. During the dinner, everyone got down on their hands and knees and kissed Sondheim's feet and thanked him for years of filling their ears with pleasantries. (Fine, not really. But they should have.) Instead, some of Broadway's most prolific performers (like Bernadette Peters, Duncan Sheik of "Spring Awakening," Roger Lopez of "Avenue Q," and Michael John LaChiusa belted out some showtunes, in the name of showtunes! And really, what more could a musician ask for on his birthday, other than more music? (Just kidding. We're sure everyone was sublime. Especially B. Peters.)
